Nathan Road safety improvement
Road plan: Views are being sought on saftey upgrades to Nathan Road between Waterloo and Mong Kok Roads.

Views are being sought on a plan to improve the safety of Nathan Road between Waterloo and Mong Kok Roads.

Transport Department Senior Engineer Chau Sau-ming said the accident rate on that road section is high, and three different improvement concepts have been developed for consideration.

3 options

One is to conduct further improvement at critical junctions, such as Shantung and Argyle Streets, which can lower the accident rate by 10%. However, the department can only expand part of the roadside footpaths and implement some traffic management measures.

The second concept is to ban motorcycles, cars and trucks from entering that section of Nathan Road, which can lower the accident rate by 25%. Some of the footpath can be expanded, resulting in lower traffic flow.

The third one is to ban all vehicles except buses from entering that section of Nathan Road, which can lower the accident rate by 40%. This concept can turn the whole section from three to two-lane traffic, allowing full footpath extention. Under this concept there is also the option of a part-time ban, such as from 7am to 11pm.
