Tunnel toll hike delayed

*
Eastern Harbour Crossing
Concession continues: The $15 concessionary toll for empty taxis will continue until December 31.

Legislative revisions will be made to postpone the October 1 launch of the new return toll charge for taxi passengers using the Eastern Harbour Crossing, the Environment, Transport & Works Bureau says.

The New Hong Kong Tunnel Company announced today that concession schemes, including the concessionary toll of $15 for empty taxis, will be extended to December 31 from September 30.

The company decided in May that the concessionary toll will last until September 30, so the toll for empty taxis using the tunnel will be increased from $15 to $25. The bureau at that time legislated to increase accordingly the return toll charge payable by taxi passengers using the tunnel, whose hiring did not begin from cross-harbour taxi stands, on October 1.

In view of the extension, the bureau will amend the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulation 2005, to postpone the launch.
