Mandatory window inspection mooted

*

The feasibility of requiring building owners to regularly inspect and maintain windows will be explored to boost safety, Housing, Planning & Lands Bureau says.

The Buildings Department received 35 emergency reports relating to aluminium window failures in the first half of this year. In most cases, falls were mainly due to a lack of regular inspection and proper maintenance, and improper use.

To strengthen the control of window alteration and installation works, the bureau has proposed to designate the installation and alteration of windows as minor works in the Buildings (Amendment) Bill.

As a long term measure, the bureau will look into the feasibility of adopting a mandatory approach to require building owners to inspect windows regularly and carry out necessary maintenance work. Public views will be sought as part of the second stage consultation.

The bureau will also introduce a detailed manual for contractors and workers engaged in the installation and maintenance of aluminium windows.
