Views are being sought on the proposed opening of Citizen Band (26.96 - 27.42 MHz) for public use under the class licence regime.

Citizen Band radio is a short-range two-way radio communications device for both hobby and business use. It operates in the 26.96 - 27.41 MHz band, providing 40 voice channels to users on a shared basis.

It is a low cost radio means that can be used by people for daily communications and recreational purposes. Due to the propagation characteristic of 27 MHz radio waves, handheld Citizen Band radio cand provide a good coverage for use in country parks and rural areas.

Class licence

The Telecommunications Authority intends to allow the use of handheld and mobile Citizen Band radios by creating a class licence to license their use under section 7B (2) of the Telecommunications Ordinance. As class licensees are not required to apply for an individual licence, people will be able to enjoy the use of Citizen Band radios without unnecessary licensing burden.

The consultation paper, covering issues such as type approval of Citizen Band radio products and a proposed restriction on its use in fixed locations, is available on OFTA's website.
