Traffic contingency plans set for May 1

Transport Department

The Transport Department will closely monitor traffic flow in the first week of May when the Eastern Harbour Crossing's revised toll starts.

As traffic at the Cross Harbour Tunnel and Western Harbour Crossing may be more congested, the Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre will be activated to monitor the situation and maintain close communication with tunnel and transport operators and Police to react promptly to problems.

Department officers and Police will man major road junctions and adjust the duration of traffic lights to enhance traffic flow if required. Frequent traffic messages will be broadcast.

Transport operators will deploy additional services, and commuters should leave for school or work earlier than usual.

Taxi passengers using the eastern tunnel will need to pay the new surcharge of $40, including $15 return toll, or $25 if their hiring begins from a cross-harbour taxi stand.
