The scheme on relaxation of peak-hour clearways and 7am-7pm clearways on roads with speed limits below 70kph for taxis will be extended to January 31 next year allowing taxis to offer point-to-point services.
The Transport Department said the scheme, introduced in May 2003, has not caused any major traffic congestion or obstruction.
Taxis will be exempted from restrictions on picking up and setting down passengers on these clearways. As with the current arrangement, taxis will not be allowed to wait for passengers on these clearways.
Since the existing restricted zone permits of taxis will expire after January 31, taxi owners and drivers have to replace their existing permits with the new ones. Details of the permit renewal arrangements will be announced soon.
Taxi drivers should strictly observe the 'pick up, drop-off and go' and 'no waiting' rules. If there are violations of traffic rules or obstructions are caused to other road users, the department may terminate the relaxation in whole or in part before the expiry of the extended period.
The department and the Police will monitor the traffic situation closely and take enforcement action when necessary.
