Views sought on Lantau development
*

A consultation will be launched mid-November inviting views on Lantau Island's development.

Speaking on radio talk shows today, Deputy Secretary for Housing, Planning & Lands Thomas Tso said the Government will strike a balance between economic development and conservation.

Explaining the Government's plan for the island, Mr Tso said economic infrastructure and major tourism proposals have been identified to enhance Hong Kong's economic competitiveness.

They include the Logistics Park, a cross boundary transport hub, the Sunny Bay Tourism Node, a possible theme park or major recreational uses at Tung Chung East, and resort facilities at South Lantau.

New attractions

To harness the recreation potential and local attraction of rural Lantau, the Government proposes to set up spa and watersports centres in South Lantau. It also plans to give Mui Wo a facelift, preserve the Tai O fishing village, and provide a cycle track network.

Another initiative is to maximise the recreation potential of country parks there.

To address conservation needs, the Government aims to implement the proposed Lantau North (Extension) Country Park and Marine Park in South West Lantau.

When asked whether the construction of another theme park will affect Hong Kong Disneyland, Mr Tso said the Government will offer every possible help to assist the opening the HK Disneyland next year while the proposal of anther theme park is good for the long-term development of the island.

Mr Tso said the Government will conduct environmental assessment to ensure that all projects will not have any negative impact on the environment. He stressed that the Government will keep the reclamation area to the minimum.
