Coach services ready for peak demand

*
Transport Department

Cross-boundary coach operators will bolster services if necessary to meet heavy demand over the next two days, Assistant Commissioner for Transport Ip Man-kwong says.

Speaking on a radio talkshow this morning, Mr Ip said the Transport Department has activated its Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre to monitor the situation.

Operations were smooth yesterday, he said, and passengers could board coaches as soon as they arrived at the terminus, even at busy Mong Kok station. There were fewer passengers at cross-boundary coach stations than in previous peak periods, and services were maintained at seven-minute intervals.

Deputy Secretary for Transport, Environment & Works Choi Suk-han said coach operators will introduce some concessions to compete with other transport operators.

The new arrangement for cross-boundary coach services will last two years, Ms Choi said, adding that the Government will discuss transport issues with Mainland authorities after the completion of the Shenzhen Western Corridor.
