Public views sought on highway safety

*

The independent expert panel on the Tuen Mun Road traffic incident will tomorrow launch a one-month public consultation to canvass views on how to improve highway safety.

Members of the public are invited to give suggestions in writing to the Panel Secretariat, 11/F, Murray Building, Garden Road, Central, or via the homepage of the Environment, Transport & Works Bureau (http://www.etwb.gov.hk) on or before September 3, 2003.

In a major traffic incident occurred on July 10 on Tuen Mun Road, a double-deck bus collided with a container truck and plunged into the valley, resulting in 21 fatalities and 20 injuries.

The Chief Executive appointed the independent expert panel, chaired by Dr Cheng Hon-kwan, to evaluate current highway safety measures and make recommendations for enhancement having regard to the crash.

Other members include Edmund Leung, Past President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and Dr Wong Sze-chun, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Hong Kong.
