Queen Elizabeth Hospital will implement safety recommendations issued in an investigation panel's report on an incident in which a malleable copper retractor was left in a patient's body.
Another operation was needed to remove it and the patient has recovered.
The panel said operation theatre staff must ensure the number of instruments are accurately counted before the closure of surgical wounds. They should also enhance communication on the progress of the operation and anaesthesia, and the use of instruments.
The hospital said it accepts the findings and will implement the recommendations as soon as possible. It has apologised to the patient.
