The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department urges people to continue action against mosquito breeding, despite the monthly average ovitrap index staying at naught in January. A nil reading was also recorded for port areas.

The department reminded the public today to pay particular attention to small containers such as vases, saucers and trays as well as damp surfaces in depressions during spring cleaning.

People should change water for plants, including flowers and tangerines for the festive season, clean the containers thoroughly at least once a week and leave no water in the saucers underneath the pots.

The public and estate management bodies should scrub all drains and surface sewers and limewash them with an alkaline detergent compound at least once a week to remove any mosquito eggs.

Drains should be kept free from blockage and all depressions should be filled up to prevent puddles.
