The Department of Health warns people not to buy parasitic weight-control products.
Responding to a report a website was seen promoting such a product, the department said infestation of parasites has no scientific basis in weight loss. But they can cause abdominal pain and distension, vomiting, diarrhoea and malnutrition.
Parasite infestation can also be fatal if serious complications such as intestinal, biliary tract or pancreatic duct obstruction arise. The worms can even invade organs.
While infestation can be treated with medication that kills the parasite, the worms may require surgical removal if there are obstructions.
The department urges people to consult their doctor before taking drugs for weight control.
