The Centre for Food Safety has advised people not to drink a Bonsoy soymilk product which may contain unusually high levels of iodine.
The affected product is: Bonsoy Soy Milk (1 litre), best before: all dates up to and including 3-11-2011.
Australian authorities say the manufacturer Spiral Foods is recalling the affected products which have been imported into Hong Kong. If consumers have bought it they should not drink it and should seek medical advice if they have questions about it.
The centre has contacted Australian authorities for more information. It has alerted the trade to stop selling the affected products and is monitoring the situation.
Iodine is needed for the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones, which control several metabolic processes in the human body. However, chronic consumption of high levels of iodine can affect the thyroid gland.
