Shuttlecock success: Zhou Mi and Yip Pui-yin win silver and gold medals in the women's badminton singles.

Hong Kong athletes have achieved their best-ever result in the East Asian Games, winning 110 medals - 26 gold, 31 silver and 53 bronze - far exceeding the medal tally won in the past four games, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing says.

On the games' last day, Mr Tsang congratulated local medalists for their excellent achievement, saying there is much to learn from their perseverance and exemplary sportsmanship.

"Their remarkable performance in various events well demonstrates their skills have already reached the levels of major sports games. I hope they will learn as well as gain valuable experience from the [games] and continue to strive for excellence in forthcoming international sports events," he said.

Praising all athletes who took part, he said they competed fairly and displayed strong determination, great perseverance and true sportsmanship.

"They have created the proudest moment of the games and shown us the unifying power of sport by overriding national, political, religious and language barriers," Mr Tsang said.

Today's results

Today the Hong Kong team won three gold, three silver and six bronze medals.

Two gold medals came in wushu, in the women's taolu duilian (Kwan Ning-wai, Yuen Ka-ying and Zheng Tianhui) and the men's taolu duilian (Cheng Chung-hang, Hei Zhihong and Leung Ka-wai).

Yip Pui-yin and Zhou Mi of the women's badminton singles snatched gold and silver. The other two silvers were in wushu events, going to Leung Ka-wai in the men's taolu jianshu and qiangshu all-round, and Har Ching-tung in the 52kg men's sanshou.

The six bronze medals were in the men's diving synchronised 3m springboard (Foo Chuen-li and Poon Wai-ching), men's hockey, women's high jump (Yip Hiu-laam), the 56kg men's wushu-sanshou (Wong Ting-hong), the women's 5,000m (Leong Yuen-fan), and women's 4x100m relay (Hui Man-ling, Leung Hau-sze, Wan Kin-yee and Chan Ho-yee).
