Centre for Health Protection

A total of 123 HIV infections were reported in the year's third quarter, bringing Hong Kong's total reported cases to 4,372 since 1984, the Centre for Health Protection says. Fifteen new AIDS cases were reported, with 11 related to heterosexual contact. The new cases brought the total to 1,086 since 1985.

The new HIV cases comprise 91 men and 32 women. Twenty-eight acquired the infection via heterosexual contact, 46 via homosexual or bisexual contact, and two through drug injection. The transmission routes of the remaining 47 cases were undetermined due to insufficient data.

Fifty-eight cases were reported by public hospitals and clinics, 33 by private hospitals and clinics, 13 by the Department of Health's Social Hygiene Clinics and 11 by the AIDS unit.

The most common AIDS-defining illness was tuberculosis.
