A 37-year-old man with a good health record died of human swine flu today at the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital.
He developed flu symptoms on September 1 and was admitted to the hospital's isolation ward on September 5.
He was confirmed to have contracted human swine flu the same day and was treated with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition continued to deteriorate that day, and he was transferred to the intensive care unit and put on ventilation support. He died at 8.35am today.
11 schools to suspend classes
Meanwhile, the Department of Health today advised eight primary schools and three secondary schools to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine flu.
There have been flu outbreaks at the schools, involving 824 students aged between six and 17. For details, click here.
The primary schools are Ma Tau Chung Government Primary School (Hung Hom Bay) and SHK Fung Kei Millennium Primary School in Hung Hom, Ying Wah Primary School in Sham Shui Po, Alliance Primary School, Sheung Shui, Christian Alliance H C Chan Primary School and CUHKFAA Thomas Cheung School in Sha Tin, CCC Heep Who Primary School (afternoon session) in Yau Ma Tei and Ho Shun Primary School in Tsuen Wan.
The secondary schools involved are Chinese International School (Secondary School) in North Point, Maryknoll Fathers' School in Sham Shui Po and Ho Yu College in Tung Chung.
Seven students required hospitalisation. All of the affected students are in stable condition. Thirty students' specimens tested positive for human swine flu.
As at 2.30pm today, there were 446 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours. This brings to 22,500 the total number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong.
