*
Centre for Health Protection

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed a Legionnaires' disease case involving a 77-year-old Yau Ma Tei man.

He came down with fever and vomiting on August 2 and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital the following day. He is now stable. His urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila.

There have been 20 cases of Legionnaires' disease this year. Thirteen were reported last year and 11 in 2007.

To prevent the disease maintain good health and avoid smoking and excessive drinking, handle garden soils, composts and potting mixes with caution, and follow good practices in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of man-made water systems.
