CE pledges to restore confidence in drug supply
*

Chief Executive Donald Tsang says the Government will do its best to restore public confidence in the city's drug-supply system, adding the committee to review its regulation will begin work as soon as possible.

Speaking to reporters this morning, Mr Tsang said the Government understands public concern over recent pharmacy incidents, and has taken measures to address the issue.

The review committee will probe the supervisory system, regulations and culture within the trade. Permanent Secretary for Food & Health (Health) Sandra Lee will chair the committee while Director of Health Dr Lam Ping-yan will be vice chairman.

Non-Official members are Sabrina Chan, Iris Chang, Celine Cheng, Sandra Chow, William Chui, Benjamin Kwong, Dr Alan Lau, Andy Lau, Connie Lau, Lau Oi-kwok, Professor Kenneth Lee, Dr Tse Hung-hing, Tina Yap and Dr Yeung Chiu-fat.

Official members are Deputy Director of Health Dr Gloria Tam, Department of Health Chief Pharmacist Anthony Chan, Hospital Authority Director (Cluster Services) Dr Cheung Wai-lun, and Hospital Authority Chief Pharmacist Anna Lee.

The committee will hold its first meeting in early April. The review will be completed in six to nine months' time.

Mr Tsang said the Department of Health will inspect all drug manufacturing plants, adding the Hospital Authority will conduct a thorough check of drugs being dispensed at public hospitals and clinics.

The Government will also probe recent incidents to see if they involved any human errors, and will deal with the issue seriously.
