Vigilance against chickenpox urged

Hong Kong has entered its peak chickenpox season and the Centre for Health Protection urges people and schools to be vigilant against the illness.

There were more than 800 cases last month, much higher than the 300 to 600 figure in the past few months.

Although chickenpox cases in the past few weeks have remained low compared with the corresponding periods in past years, people should maintain personal and environmental hygiene to prevent infection, the centre said.

Chickenpox occurs throughout the year and peaks November to February. There were 7,962 cases this year up to November, 17,940 last year and 14,415 in 2006.

Letters have been sent to schools to remind them of preventive measures. A chickenpox vaccine is available and about 90% of people vaccinated will acquire immunity.

Parents can see their family doctors for further advice. For more information click here.
