Melamine found in Nestle milk sample

*

The Centre for Food Safety has confirmed a sample of Nestle Dairy Farm Pure Milk, a one-litre pack for catering use only, contained melamine. The other 64 samples were free from the toxic substance.

The level of melamine detected in the Nestle sample was 1.4ppm - which the centre believed is low. However, small children should not consume the product.

The centre has asked the trade to stop selling it and to recall the product.

Tests of locally available international brands of infant formula not manufactured in the Mainland have almost been completed, the centre said.

The Centre for Health Protection said it had not received any new report today from the Hospital Authority nor private doctors of a confirmed case of kidney disease related to the consumption of milk products tainted with melamine.

Two males and 10 females aged from one year to 17 who had consumed milk products had been referred to Princess Margaret Hospital or other specialist clinics for further clinical examinations in the 24 hours up to 1pm today.

As of 5pm today, the centre's hotline - 2125 1133 - had received 195 enquiries. Ninety-nine claimed that they or their children had consumed milk products contaminated with melamine.

Among them, 10 males and six females aged from four to 55 claimed to have symptoms of kidney problems including difficult or painful urination and changes in the frequency of urination.

The public can also call 2381 6096 for information on the tested dairy samples.
