More support set for HK athletes
*

The Government will explore ways to increase Hong Kong athletes' participation in international events and bolster their exchanges with Mainland counterparts, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Carrie Yau says.

Speaking on a radio talk show this morning Mrs Yau said the Government will increase its support in sports development by promoting sport in the community, enhancing elite athletes' training and hosting more international events.

A consultant will be appointed to study the city's soccer development later this year. Similar research may be conducted for other disciplines.

On the equestrian competition venue in Sha Tin, Mrs Yau said it will be demolished and the site will be returned to the Hong Kong Sports Institute for its redevelopment project. The Government has earmarked $1.8 billion for the redevelopment work.

Noting sports promotion involves many resources, Mrs Yau said she hoped newly-elected lawmakers will offer support in this area.
