The Centre for Health Protection has urged people to take precautionary measures against influenza infection as the recent rise in flu isolates signals the onset of the summer flu season.
The Public Health Laboratory Centre recorded more than 140 flu detections this week compared to 149 from July 1 to 13.
The sentinel surveillance systems showed the consultation rates for flu-like illness in private doctor and general out-patient clinics remained at low levels in recent weeks.
In the week ending July 12 the consultation rates for private doctor and out-patient clinics were 34.8 and 3.5 per 1,000 consultations, as to 35.9 and 3.3 for the previous week.
There were two confirmed flu outbreaks affecting seven people in the same week. More outbreaks in elderly homes are expected during the summer flu season and training workshops for these staff will be provided. Alerts have also been sent to doctors, schools and institutions.
