The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed a case of Enterovirus-71infection involving a four-year-old girl, bringing the year's total to 37.
She developed a rash with blisters over her hands and feet on May 26 and sought medical advice at Tuen Mun Hospital on the same day. She did not need to be hospitalised.
The nursery she attended reported earlier that a total of four children, including the girl, had symptoms of hand-foot-mouth disease. Centre staff have provided health advice to the institution.
There were 12 EV-71 cases last year, 35 in 2004, eight in 2005 and 16 in 2006.
EV-71 is a viral infection usually found among young children that also causes hand-foot-mouth disease. It is transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges. May to August is the usual peak season. For health tips, click here.
