About 437,000 students from 907 pre-primary institutions, primary and secondary schools have participated in the Joyful Fruit Day 4.17 celebration. The number almost doubles last year's 230,000 turnout.

Launching today's event Director of Health Dr PY Lam said 60% of children from pre-primary institutions and primary schools as well as more than 20% of secondary students participated.

The event promotes daily fruit consumption among teachers and students. Apart from eating fruit together at school, students participate in related school activities to enrich their experience of healthy eating.

Dr Lam said adequate consumption of fruit and vegetables can lower the risk of developing chronic disease.
