Community sports clubs flourish
*

The number of volunteer-run Community Sports Clubs has swelled from 84 in 2001-02 to the current 330, with total membership climbing from 8,400 to nearly 32,000, the Sports Commission's Community Sports Committee Chairman Chau How-chen says .

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Prize Presentation Ceremony of the Community Sports Club Project Inter-club Competitions today, he said the realisation of the goal of 'Sports for All' at the community level relies not only on the support of the Government and National Sports Associations but also the devotion of enthusiastic sports workers.

Mr Chau believed Community Sports Clubs will take an active part in preparing Hong Kong for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The Leisure & Cultural Services Department has been assisting associations in forming the Community Sports Clubs in the 18 districts since 2001.

In 2007-08, the department spent $8.2 million on the development of the Community Sports Clubs, enabling 40,000 people to take part in 1,800 activities. It will increase its subvention to $8.5 million in 2008-09 so that 1,900 activities will be available to 42,000 participants.
