The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong has set up the Torchbearer Selection Sub-committee to choose 84 of the 120 Olympic torchbearers, the Home Affairs Bureau says.

Regarding to the criteria and procedures in selecting 120 Olympic torchbearers, the bureau said the sub-committee has formulated a set of criteria. The 84 people come from across Hong Kong's 18 districts and have made contributions to the city's sport, such as athletes and representatives from the education, cultural and other sectors.

Members of the sub-committee come from various sectors including the sports, education, arts and communications, as well as the Equestrian Company and the Jockey Club.

Twenty-four of the torchbearers will be selected through selection activities organised by sponsors.

The remaining 12 torchbearers will be nominated by the Beijing Organisation Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad. The list of torchbearers will be announced after final approval by the committee.
