The Department of Health has urged people not to consume anti-impotence products from unknown and unclear sources.

The plea comes after five patients aged 52 to 79 were sent to public hospitals recently after complications with the products. Sildenafil and glibenclamide metabolites were found in their urine. Three admitted taking drugs for erectile dysfunction.

Glibenclamide can cause nausea and gastrointestinal problems. Improper use can cause a significant fall in blood sugar causing serious health problems and even death.

The side effects of sildenafil include low blood pressure, headache, vomiting, dizziness and transient vision disturbances. It can interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs and lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.
