3,900 live pigs available Thursday

Heavy snowfall on the Mainland is still affecting the live pig supply to Hong Kong, the Food & Health Bureau says.

According to Ministry of Commerce figures the estimated number of imported live pigs from the Mainland tomorrow will be 3,500. The total number of live pigs at slaughter houses will be 3,900 together with 400 live pigs from local farms.

Today 4042 pigs arrived at slaughter houses with 3,721 imported from the Mainland and 321 from local farms. The wholesale price for live pigs ranged from $1,452 to $1,888 per 100 catties, with an average price of $1,598.

The bureau said some pig transportation trucks are still stranded on highways into Guangdong and the date of arrival is difficult to predict.

The three live-pig agents will make alternative arrangements and try to source pigs from Guangdong Province and other less-affected areas.
