Cantonese opera troupe gets 3-year grant
*

The Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe will receive a three-year grant under the Cantonese Opera Development Fund's New Talent scheme. The grant is for $1 million a year.

The troupe will organise training and rehearsals, and stage formal performances of traditional as well as experimental and innovative plays. It also must appeal to a wider audience and potential participants through school education and community outreach programmes. The troupe will be registered as a local non-profit-making company.

Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing said the Government will actively preserve and promote cultural heritage, such as Cantonese opera. He hopes the scheme can encourage Cantonese opera troupes to identify and nurture new talent.

In response to the sector's calls to strengthen training for new talent the Cantonese Opera Development Fund introduced the scheme. It aims to provide systematic training programmes for local young talent and rejuvenate traditional art.
