Foot loose!: Dancesport athletes showcase their dance techniques at the Tai Kok Tsui Sports Centre to celebrate breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest dance by couples.

More than 100 couples have showcased their dance techniques at the Tai Kok Tsui Sports Centre to celebrate breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest dance by couples in July.

Deputy Director of Leisure & Cultural Services (Leisure Services) Vincent Liu today presented a congratulatory letter to the DanceSport Association, which organised the record-breaking event, and certificates to participants.

Mr Liu said dancesport has been growing fast in recent years. With the subvention from the department, 21 community sports clubs were established in just three years with more than 6,000 participants.

The department subvented the association to hold the International DanceSport Extravaganza on July 7 and 8 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR.

In one session, a record 540 pairs of dancesport enthusiasts danced for five minutes to break the world record. Among them, more than 700 participants were from community sports clubs and schools sports programmes, subvented by the department in support of the development of sports.

Under the department's School Sports Programme, about 250 sports activities, including training, have been provided so far this year for more than 7,000 students of 74 schools. Community sports clubs have organised another 152 activities this year.

Thirty-five couples have been selected for progressive training to prepare for international competitions and the East Asian Games in 2009. Among them, three couples are getting training through the school sports programme and 16 couples are from community sports clubs.
