The Centre for Food Safety has advised consumers not to drink Metromint flavoured water due to possible contamination with bacterium Bacillus cereus.
The affected products are 16.9-ounce bottles of Metromint flavoured water (Peppermint, Spearmint, Orangemint and Lemonmint) with a "Best Before" date prior to December 21, 2008.
The centre has contacted the US authorities for further information and has urged the trade to stop selling the product.
Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous micro-organism of the environment, usually found in contaminated food. It may produce toxins under favourable conditions like warm room temperature. Diarrhoea and vomiting may occur within hours of ingestion.
The centre has also taken 14 samples of other products of concern, namely Pringles and Bourbon, for potassium bromate tests . All results were satisfactory.
