The Centre for Food Safety has appealed to retailers to stop selling a batch of frozen mussel meat from Sanford Limited of New Zealand, due to its suspected Listeria contamination.
The centre was informed of a product recall as a result of the detection of Listeria in samples of frozen mussel meat processed by the company's Havelock processing premises.
The centre is closely monitoring the situation. It has appealed to the public, especially the high-risk groups, to cook frozen mussel meat and other seafood thoroughly before consumption.
Listeria may cause fever, headache, vomiting and diarrhea, but healthy people rarely develop symptoms.
The effect on pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and people with lowered immunity, however, can be severe. Click here to learn more about the bacteria.
