The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed this year's first case of meningococcal infection, involving a 34-year-old woman living in Kowloon City.

She developed fever and confusion on October 12 and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital on October 13. She is now in stable condition.

She had no travel history within the incubation period. Her home contacts have no symptoms of meningococcal infection.

There were four meningococcal infections in 2004 and 2005, and six in 2006.

People should stay alert to the threat of meningococcal infection and take precautionary measures against the disease. It is transmitted by direct contact, such as through droplets from the nose and throat of infected people. The incubation period varies from two to 10 days, and is commonly three to four days.
