Illegal meat imports seized

Centre for Food Safety

Centre for Food Safety and Customs officers have seized 12kg of poultry meat, pork and beef without health certificates at the Lo Wu, Shenzhen Bay Port and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line checkpoints. Two men and a woman are being questioned.

Including today's seizure, the centre has confiscated about 1,300kg of meat and poultry with no health certificates at the checkpoints since August, with 16 travellers prosecuted.

Travellers should not to bring into Hong Kong any meat, including poultry, without an official certificate, or they will face prosecution. To drive home the message, leaflets were distributed at the three checkpoints over the last two days.

The centre will closely monitor the situation and take stringent enforcement action to safeguard food safety and public health. To report illegal meat imports call 2868 0000.
