Tai chi show to break HK record

*
Tai chi
Healthy exercise: More than 20,000 tai chi enthusiasts, dressed in seven different colours, will practise the sport together for 20 minutes at the coming Mega Tai Chi Show.

A 20-minute tai chi performance with more than 20,000 participants will be staged at Kai Tak on September 30 in a bid to set a new record in Hong Kong to celebrate Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's 10th anniversary.

The Mega Tai Chi Show, jointly organised by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, Wushu Union, Chinese Martial Arts Dragon & Lion Dance Association and Tai Chi Association, will offer tai chi enthusiasts an opportunity to exchange knowledge and skills with both local and Mainland masters.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang will open the show. Six renowned Mainland tai chi masters and representatives of the three tai chi organisations will give demonstrations.

The department held a similar event in Happy Valley in December 2001 when more than10,400 people performed tai chi for 30 minutes, setting a record in Hong Kong for the number of people performing Tai Chi.

Tai chi, once regarded as an exercise for the elderly, is suitable for people of all ages and has become increasingly popular among young people. The department therefore launched parent-child tai chi classes in April.
