Queen's Pier forum must be sensible: Carrie Lam

*

Secretary for Development Carrie Lam will attend an open forum at Queen's Pier tomorrow, where she hopes to reach out to the community and build a communication platform. She believes the forum will be carried out in a harmonious atmosphere.

Speaking on a morning radio talk show, she expressed hope the discussion would include topics such as conservation and town planning, in addition to Queen's Pier.

Mrs Lam said she respects people using hunger strikes as a way to express their opinions on preserving the pier, but does not agree with their insistence on staying at the pier, as it will delay necessary works.

She said pier's move has been planned for years, and the request to preserve it in situ is unacceptable.

The Government will make every possible method to preserve the pier and suggests relocating it somewhere in Central in the future, with no exact location decided yet, she said.

The pier's appearance will be preserved and its structure will be reinforced. Models on the suggested plan will also be created for the public, she added.

Mrs Lam said there is a diversity of opinions on the options for the pier from the public. After collecting opinions from the Legislative Council and District Council, she believes that the Government's plan is backed by quite a lot of people.
