32 ill in respiratory infection outbreak

*
Centre for Health Protection

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed an upper respiratory tract infection outbreak affecting 28 students and four staff at a Tsuen Wan pre-school for children with intellectual disability.

The 21 men and 11 women, aged two to 40, came down with fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat from June 13 to 20. Of them, 25 consulted general practitioners or outpatient clinics. One boy and a girl, both aged five, were admitted to Yan Chai and Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospitals on June 15 and have been discharged.

Centre for Health Protection officers visited the school and offered health tips to staff.

To prevent upper respiratory tract infection and influenza people should to adopt precautionary measures. People, particularly children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they come down with symptoms of respiratory tract infection.
