The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed the year's third local case of human myiasis, involving a 40-year-old North District man with no recent travel history.

He was admitted to North District Hospital on June 6 and maggots were found in his right foot. He is now in stable condition.

Human myiasis is caused by parasitic maggots which infest superficial wounds and body orifices such as the mouth, ear and nose of debilitated people. The larvae feed on the host's dead or living tissue, and can cause serious damage. For more on human myiasis, click here.
