Consumers should avoid a herbal product that treats skin problems as it contains rifampicin, an undeclared western drug ingredient that can cause side effects.

A 21-year-old woman was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on May 27 and was found to have renal function problems and a high level of bilirubin, a pigment produced when the liver processes waste products. She had consumed the product before the onset of symptoms and is now in stable condition.

The Department of Health has no record of the product having been imported into Hong Kong for sale.

Rifampicin is an antibiotic used in combination with other drugs for treating tuberculosis. It can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abnormalities in liver function and renal failure. It may not be suitable for people on oral contraceptives, breast feeding or suffering from hepatic disorders. These people should consult medical professionals for advice.

Rifampicin is classified as an antibiotic and can only be sold on a doctor's prescription and under a pharmacist's supervision.

People who have the product should stop taking it immediately and seek medical advice if they feel unwell. They should dispose of it or send it to the department's Pharmaceutical Service at 3/F, Public Health Laboratory Centre, 382 Nam Cheong Street, Kowloon during office hours.
