Fifth Enterovirus-71 case confirmed
*
Centre for Health Protection

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed this year's fifth case of Enterovirus-71, involving a four-year-old girl with no recent travel history.

She developed a mouth ulcer, blisters on her hands and a rash on her feet on May 29 and went to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment. She was not hospitalised and is in stable condition.

Her one-year-old sister developed symptoms of hand-foot-mouth disease and has consulted a private doctor. Other family members do not have any symptoms.

The kindergarten the girl attends has temporarily suspended lessons due to an outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease.

Two boys, aged 3 and 4, in the Sha Tin kindergarten were confirmed to have EV-71 on June 1 and May 26. Twelve other children, aged between 3 and 6, were found to have hand-foot-mouth disease between May 5 and 30. All of them are in stable condition and do not required hospitalisation.

As the disease is transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, the public should stay alert to the threat of EV-71 and take preventive measures. Click here for more details, or call the Central Health Education hotline, 2833 0111.
