The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed a case of Enterovirus-71, involving a three-year-old boy with no recent travel history.

He developed a mouth ulcer and blisters on his feet and hands on May 26. A private doctor treated hm and he has recovered. His family members have no symptoms.

A four-year-old boy attending the same kindergarten was confirmed to have EV-71 on May 26. Thirteen other children in the same kindergarten, aged three to six, were found to have hand, foot and mouth disease between May 5 and 30. One was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital. They are all in stable condition.

This is the third case of EV-71 infection reported this year. There were 35 cases of EV-71 reported in 2004, 8 in 2005 and 16 in 2006.

As the disease is transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, the public should stay alert to the threat of EV-71 and take preventive measures. Click here for more details, or call the Central Health Education hotline, 2833 0111.
