Financial Secretary Henry Tang
Poverty prevention: Financial Secretary Henry Tang meets the media after chairing the Commission on Poverty meeting.
*

Financial Secretary Henry Tang has commended Commission on Poverty members for their work in promoting the development of social enterprises, and offering insight on how to help them become sustainable and better businesses.

Chairing the commission's 14th meeting today, Mr Tang said the Government takes poverty prevention seriously, and will consider the suitable institutional structure needed to continue work on the subject.

The commission discussed further promoting social enterprise development and the operational model in implementing the Child Development Fund. It considered that fostering a tripartite partnership between the community, the business sector and the Government is crucial to making social enterprises better businesses.

Members also discussed the operational model in implementing the fund, and agreed that additional resources could be used to implement trial child development projects that contain two essential features - the development of personal growth plans for children, and trying out an asset-based targeted savings scheme.

The Government will consider the commission's recommendations in designing the detailed operational model of the fund.

The commission's term will end in June and a report summarising its work in the past two and a half years will be issued.

The meeting's agenda and papers are available on the commission's website.
