Caution issued on 2 health products

 

Consumers are urged not to buy or use two health products that contain a western drug ingredient which may cause side effects, the Department of Health says.

 

The products are Chongcaoliubian Jiaonang and another product translated as "Santi Scalper Penis Erection Capsule".

 

Laboratory tests found the two products contain sildenafil, used for treating impotence.

A 65-year-old man went to United Christian Hospital for chest and abdominal pain after taking Chongcaoliubian Jiaonang obtained in China.

 

As for the second product, the department obtained samples for analysis after receiving a report from the Hospital Authority that it contained the drug. The products are not available for sale in Hong Kong.

 

Sildenafil should only be used under medical supervision. Products containing it are 3rd Schedule poisons under the Pharmacy & Poisons Ordinance and can only be sold on a doctor's prescription and under the supervision of a pharmacist.

 

Side effects include low blood pressure, headache, vomiting, dizziness and transient vision disturbances. People who have the products should stop using them and seek medical advice.
