City tour: Dr Linda Milan is briefed by Government officials on how the Healthy Cities project is being implemented in Kowloon City.

World Health Organisation expert Dr Linda Milan has visited Kowloon City to see how the WHO's Healthy Cities project is being implemented in the district.

The WHO Director of Building Healthy Communities & Populations toured several lanes and was briefed on the project's progress.

She also met members of the Building Healthy Kowloon City Association, set up in February to implement the project.

Dr Milan, the association's honorary patron, encouraged members to focus on the socio-economic and environmental aspects of health to improve community health from its roots.

She then met with the Assistant Director of Health (Health Promotion) Dr Regina Ching, Kowloon City District Officer Agnes Wong and community leaders.

The Healthy Cities movement is a promotion advocated by the WHO to modify the determinants of health through community participation and inter-sectoral action to prevent disease and improve public health.

The Department of Health has developed a set of guidelines for implementing the project in Hong Kong and the movement has been implemented in 13 districts since late 1990s.
