2 arrested in illicit meat seizures

Food & Environmental Hygiene Department

Food & Environmental Hygiene Department officers have arrested two people and seized 178kg of illicit meat in two blitz operations in Yuen Long and Tai Kok Tsui today.

In Yuen Long, officers seized 130kg of fresh pork of dubious origin from a Tung Yick Market stall on Hop Choi Street. A man and a woman were arrested.

In Tai Kok Tsui, a fresh provision shop on Canton Road was found to be selling frozen mutton labelled as fresh mutton. About 48kg of the meat was seized.

The case might involve a breach of the Food Business Regulation as the shop was selling frozen mutton without permission. The department will consider cancelling the shop licence as the operator has breached the licensing condition that prohibits the sale of frozen meat as fresh meat.

Anyone who has doubts about meat being sold at retail outlets should call the department's hotline 2868 0000.
