Elsie Leung heads Equestrian Events fund
*

A 2008 Beijing Olympic Equestrian Events Hong Kong Fund has been set up, and former Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung has been appointed as head of the fund's Board of Governors, the Home Affairs Bureau says.

The Board of Governors comprises seven non-official members - Chau How-chen, Yu Kwok-chun, Shelley Lee, Victor Hui, Raymond Lee, William Leung and Wilfred Ng - and Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs Agnes Allcock as the ex-officio member. All appointments will end on December 7, 2008.

The fund aims to raise funds to support cultural, education and community involvement activities relating to the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events and to boost community participation.

The fund will help inspire Hong Kong people to embrace Olympism and cultivate an Olympic city atmosphere in the city. It will also help enhance social cohesion and an awareness and appreciation in the community as to the value of sports in general and the Olympic spirit in particular.

Hong Kong will stage the events in August and September, 2008. The Co-ordination Committee on Culture, Education & Community Involvement under the Equestrian Committee (Hong Kong) of Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad has formulated a comprehensive plan to cultivate community awareness, understanding and enthusiasm about the Olympic Games and the Equestrian Events.
