Useful reference can be made of New Zealand's experience to help sustain Hong Kong's fisheries trade, Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow says.

Continuing his visit in the country, Dr Chow today called on the Maori Fishing Trust in Wellington to learn more about the management of New Zealand's fisheries industry and discuss its ties to Hong Kong.

A quota system has been introduced to conserve aquatic resources, and Dr Chow was briefed on the resource distribution management system and the system of monitoring and supervision of fish catches and sale.

Dr Chow later called on Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yuanyuan and upated him on Hong Kong's latest developments and its efforts to tie in with the Central Government's strategies in lobbying support for Dr Margaret Chan's candidacy for the post of World Health Organisation Director-General.

He will attend the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific 57th session in Auckland on September 18.
