The Government will take heed of public sentiment and aspirations when promotingwork in districts, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Carrie Lam says.

Speaking on a radio programme today, Mrs Lam said district problems are becoming complicated and cannot be resolved by a single department or bureau.

To solve these problems, cross-departmental efforts with clear directions from the senior level are needed, she added.

Citing the used-clothes-collection cages placed on streets as an example, Mrs Lam said they had long been criticised for causing obstructions and inconvenience to the public in almost all 18 districts.

She said she chaired an ad hoc high-level steering committee set up last month for top management of relevant departments.

With joint efforts from different departments and bureaux, the committee eventually found a solution to the problem.

Cage crackdown begins next week

Starting from next week, the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will remove all on-street cages in a crackdown co-ordinated by District Officers.

She hoped the new approach can solve the long-lasting nuisance to the public.

She said to support initiatives on recycling and reducing waste, the Administration is trying its best to find designated off-street spots for NGOs to collect used clothes, adding140 locations have so far been identified.
