Woman ill with meningococcal infection
*
CHP logo (Eng version)

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed a local case of meningococcal infection involving a 50-year-old woman, bringing this year's total to two.

The Yuen Long woman developed fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting on May 30. She was admitted to North District Hospital on May 31 and is now stable.

She has no recent travel history. Her three home contacts have no symptoms and are under medical surveillance.

The infection is caused by the meningococcus bacterium, and is transmitted by direct contact, including coughing and sneezing, with infected people. Incubation varies from two to 10 days, and is commonly three to four days.

Preventive measures

To prevent meningococcal infections:

* wash hands frequently, and observe good personal and environmental hygiene;

* avoid crowded places;

* avoid close contact with people with fever or severe headaches; and,

* cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing.

Travellers returning from endemic areas should consult their doctor promptly if they feel unwell.

People can visit the centre's website for general information about the disease, or visit the Travellers' Health Service website.
