*
HPC logo (Eng version)

The Centre for Health Protection has received five more reports of fungal corneal infection, or keratitis, since mid-April, bringing the total contact-lens users affected to 32 since the infection was first reported last May.

The two men and three women, aged 21 to 28, were treated in public hospitals.

Of the 32 patients, 29 said they were users of B&L ReNu multipurpose contact lens solution. The manufacturer has suspended sales of the product.

Contact lens users should:

* wash hands properly with soap and water and dry them before handling contact lenses, contact lens solutions or related accessories;

* get regular check-ups by optometrists or ophthalmologists and follow their instructions;

* comply with wearing hours and replacement schedule of lenses;

* practice proper lens cleaning and care regimes;

* the solution in the storage case must be changed everyday;

* close all bottles of contact lens solution properly after use;

* discard contact lens solutions after one month of opening;

* storage cases should be cleaned, rinsed and dried after every use;

* all lenses, solutions and accessories should be stored in a cool and dry place;

* disinfect the case weekly by soaking it in just-boiled water for 10 minutes;

* replace cases every three months;

* do not wet lenses with saliva, or bottled or tap water;

* remove lenses when discomfort or redness occurs; and,

* seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
